PFAS: Which tests should you carry out on your products and how to ensure they comply

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are chemical compounds used for their water-, grease- and stain-repellent properties. Their use is now strictly regulated due to their persistence in the environment.

In this context, companies must identify the substances present in their products and verify their compliance with current regulations.

Would you like to quickly understand which tests are required for your products?
CTC’s PFAS brochure provides a clear overview of the analyses to be carried out, the regulatory challenges and the appropriate approaches for your specific situation.

What PFAS tests are required?

PFAS tests are generally divided into two main complementary categories.

PFAS detection tests

These analyses identify the presence of PFAS in materials or finished products. They include, in particular:

  • comprehensive screening tests (presence/absence)
  • targeted analyses of regulated substances
  • concentration measurements

These tests are used to verify regulatory compliance, particularly under REACH or specific market requirements.

Tests related to product use

These tests assess how PFAS behave under real-world conditions. They may include:

  • migration tests
  • tests of resistance to treatments (e.g. water repellency)
  • tests tailored to the product’s end use

These analyses are essential for assessing the actual risk to users and the environment.

Why is a testing strategy necessary?

Not all products require the same analyses. A testing strategy enables:

  • avoiding unnecessary testing campaigns
  • targeting substances that pose a genuine risk
  • tailoring tests to target markets
  • ensuring reliable interpretation of results

An approach based solely on detection may be insufficient if the product’s intended use is not taken into account.

If in doubt, the challenge is rarely “to test more”, but to test correctly. Consulting an expert usually helps to quickly clarify priorities.

Which products are affected by PFAS?

PFAS may be present in many products, including: leather and leather goods (surface treatments), footwear, personal protective equipment (PPE), textiles and technical components. The level of risk depends on the materials, the treatments applied and the end use.

How to choose the right PFAS tests?

The choice of tests depends on several criteria:

  • the nature of the materials
  • the treatments applied
  • the target markets
  • the applicable regulatory requirements
  • the intended use of the product

A preliminary analysis is generally required to define an appropriate strategy.

What support is available for PFAS testing?

CTC Group supports companies in defining and carrying out their PFAS testing. This support includes:

  • identifying testing requirements
  • carrying out laboratory analyses
  • interpreting the results
  • ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and market standards
