CTC has developed an industrial solution for individual leather traceability, by refining a tool that securely transfers animal traceability information via a tanning-resistant laser mark applied deep into the skin or hide: ALIS READING.
With this CTC solution, information can be accessed quickly and retrieved reliably at any stage of the leather processing chain.
To date, several ALIS READING systems have been implemented and are operational in France and elsewhere in Europe.
The CTC solution, called ALIS READING (where ALIS stands for Automatic Leather Identification System), consists of a technology capable of reading laser markings automatically and industrially, in a non-destructive manner, during the various stages of the tanning process and at the manufacturer’s prior to cutting.
This technology is based on image capture by machine vision. Linear or matrix cameras are integrated:
Once a precise image of the marked zone has been obtained, decoding software combining image processing algorithms and artificial intelligence is used to achieve a marking read-back accuracy of over 90%.
CTC’s system ensures individual traceability of skins and hides throughout the tanning process. It is fully automated and requires no additional operator intervention.
It also facilitates efforts to improve the quality of skins and hides by providing a precise link at the tanned stage between the animal's unique identifier and the defects present on its surface, enabling targeted corrective action to be taken on farms, in abattoirs and during transport.
When these systems are combined with MES (Manufacturing Execution System) software, tanneries can also benefit from real-time monitoring of production quality and targeted analysis of process variations, with factual information provided on the levers available to improve performance.
