Assessment of bio-based carbon content

Since the introduction of certain European and French regulations (Decree No 2022-748 of 29 April 2022), consumers must now be informed about the characteristics, quality and environmental impact of consumer goods and their components.

To assist with this, CTC has developed an innovative approach to measure the bio-based carbon content of the materials used to manufacture products such as footwear, leather goods, clothing and gloves. Our method enables you to obtain accurate results on the proportion of bio-based materials in your products, whether they are made from leather, textiles, plastics, or innovative materials derived from plant waste.

SCAR technology

To guarantee reliable and accurate results, CTC uses a radioactive carbon measurement method in compliance with standard EN 16640.

These analyses are performed in the laboratories of our Italian subsidiary CTC Ars Tinctoria, using SCAR technology . This technology was specially developed by CTC Ars Tinctoria. It is one of the three technologies currently available for assessing the percentage of fossil and non-fossil carbon in a material.

The C14-SCAR analyser, based on SCAR spectrometry, is an instrument designed for trace gas detection by laser spectroscopy, which uses the cavity ring-down (CRD) technique in the saturated-absorption regime (SCAR).

This instrument can detect radiocarbon in a sample of gaseous carbon dioxide with a level of precision approaching that of the Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) method. The level of precision achievable in 30 minutes of average measurements can approach 1% of modern carbon content (1 pMC), and the dynamic range exceeds fives orders of magnitude (highly enriched samples can also be measured). The preparation time for each sample is approximately 30 minutes.

Working with our experts will give you a better understanding of the environmental impact of your products. This is a key advantage when it comes to attracting consumers who are increasingly concerned about the environment.

If you have other questions or would like to know more about this method, please don't hesitate to contact us.
