Legionella sampling and analysis

Our microbiological analysis laboratory is COFRAC-accredited and approved by the French Ministry of Health, guaranteeing the quality of all of its analytical services.

Legionnaires' disease is a serious respiratory infection caused by inhaling water spray contaminated with Legionella bacteria. The infection occurs 2 to 10 days after the inhalation.

Legionnaires' disease can be prevented by simple measures and greater vigilance in maintaining water installations.

Our experts are fully qualified to conduct analyses for Legionella risk management.

What is Legionnaires' disease ?

Legionnaires' disease is a lung infection caused by bacteria from the Legionella genus.

Risk management focuses on:

  • Cooling towers in accordance with the Decree of 14 December 2013
  • Domestic hot water systems in accordance with the Decree of 1 February 2010
  • Legionella and Legionella pneumophila testing.

Three factors must be present to cause Legionnaires’ disease, namely: water contamination by Legionella, the dispersion of micro-droplets of contaminated water, and the inhalation of these micro-droplets.

Sources of exposure are thus associated with the creation of these sprays, either during the use of domestic hot water systems like showers or hot tubs or during the operation of wet cooling towers

In France, regulations in this area are based on the Decree of 14 December 2013 for cooling towers and the Decree of 1 February 2010 for domestic hot water systems

Preventative measures must be implemented to permanently maintain the concentration of Legionella pneumophila below 1,000 colony-forming units per litre (CFU/L).

To avoid the development of Legionella, action is required on three levels

  • Preventing water stagnation.
  • Combating limescale and corrosion in the installation.
  • Managing the water temperature for the entire installation.

Legionella

Legionella is a bacterium that grows slowly over eight to ten days.

Once the presence of legionella bacteria is confirmed, testing for the Legionella pneumophila species is systematically carried out.

This species is responsible for the majority of cases of Legionnaires’ disease

If there are positive results within eight or ten days, warnings are sent in order to trigger the rapid initiation of measures

Microbial culture

In accordance with regulatory requirements, if the count above is 1,000 CFU/L, the bacterial strains are kept for three months to allow for epidemiological investigations if necessary.
