Specifications and REACh regulation

At the end of 2006, the European Union adopted a new regulation for the control and marketing of chemical substances: Regulation No 1907/2006 of 18 December 2006 known as the REACh Regulation. This regulation covers the placing on the market of items such as leather goods and gloves, as well as importers of these products.

This regulation covers the placing on the market of items such as leather goods and gloves, as well as importers of these products.

Why define technical specifications for leather goods or glove-making?

These specifications will help you to draw up:

  • A list of physical tests adapted to the use and type of your products, to meet your needs and those of the market.
  • A list of chemical tests, whether regulated by Europe or recommended by CTC.

This will enable you to meet your performance requirements while complying with European safety regulations.

This will give your brand a specific standard, enabling you to:

  • Ensure consistent product quality,
  • Assess the reliability of your suppliers or sourcing,
  • Optimise costs for controlled product quality.

What should these technical specifications include?

Your document should comprise a list of tests or of chemical and/or physical substances, including:

  • The names of the substances or tests,
  • The associated normative standards,
  • And the desired requirements or, at the very least, the regulatory requirements.

Recommended: prioritising tests or substances is recommended in order to develop tailored testing programmes, based on product end-use and type, budget, production lead time and allocated time. This approach provides an opportunity to monitor and assess the quality of your suppliers.

Safety obligations guarantee:

  • Control of your supply chain.
  • Compliance with applicable regulations.

The tests recommended by CTC are based on experience and CTC’s test data.

Physical performance tests

These tests aim to adapt quality criteria based on the target market, identify the performance of your products, and ultimately position you in relation to the market or your competitors thanks to benchmarking.

Procedure

The stages to follow:

  • Take an inventory and identify the nature of the materials in the items to be considered for the technical specifications: leather, textile, coated textile, metal, etc.
  • Define the product type: city bags, sport bags, luggage.
  • Write or revise specifications for performance and/or safety tests.

Presentation of your technical specifications

The expected results include:

  • An assessment of the risks associated with the different chemicals, and scheduled inspection plans.
  • An evaluation of the performance of the materials and the finished product.
  • CTC will provide a personalised and annotated analysis during the presentation of your specifications.
