Piezometer sample

A piezometer sample involves taking a spot sample of your phreatic table.

The aim is to check the impact of your activity on the phreatic table.

The samples are taken under COFRAC accreditation, in accordance with FD T 90-523-3.

Technically speaking, the samples are taken in the piezometers (or small boreholes) on your site.

The site must have at least two piezometers, including one upstream and one downstream, to enable a comparison of the results and an assessment of the impact of your activity.

These samples are taken using small submerged pumps that can reach depths of up to 80 metres. After purging the stagnant water from the piezometer several times, a sample is collected and analysed in our laboratory. The quantity of water purged will depend on the depth of the structure and on the water level.

As with the 24-hour assessments, the frequency of this kind of check depends on the classification of your facility or your category. It can be annual, quarterly or monthly.

The aim of the piezometer sample

Verification of the quality of the phreatic table in order to determine the impact of the industrial activity. This kind of check is generally conducted using a control well (piezometer).

Checking the phreatic table is not systematically requested by the authorities (the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Directorate for the Environment, for example).

Who is required to carry out piezometer sampling?

Treatment stations and industrial facilities classified for environmental protection for ICPE. Any industrial or agricultural facility likely to generate risks or cause pollution or harm, particularly to the health and safety of residents, is a classified facility.

Frequency of phreatic table sampling

The frequency of checks can vary depending on the establishment’s activity and its classification (authorisation or declaration), but also on the geographic area. It is mainly biannual, but quarterly checks are also possible.

CTC services relating to piezometer sampling

The samples are taken under COFRAC accreditation, in accordance with the FDT90-523-3 and NF 31-615 standards.

  • Before each sample is collected, it is essential to purge the piezometer. The time this takes varies. This is done to guarantee the intended outcome, i.e. an accurate assessment of the quality of the phreatic table. If this purge is not performed, the results could be non-compliant or unusable.
  • CTC systematically purges 4 to 6 times the volume of water present, and our equipment enables us to check measurement points at depths of up to 80 metres.
  • Physical-chemical parameters, such as pH, temperature and conductivity, are also continuously measured during the purge cycle.
  • CTC ensures that the samples are stored in analytically controlled bottles (NF 90-524) and transports them to our COFRAC-accredited laboratory in a refrigerated chamber (5 °C ± 3) immediately after sampling is completed to comply with the regulatory requirements in terms of analysis lead times (ISO 5667-3).
  • The absence of an intermediary between the sampling and the analysis guarantees rapid processing of your samples.
  • Provision of a sample report showing the results of the analyses provided by our laboratory, plus a comparison with threshold values and comments.
