Leather has beneficial comfort properties, including water vapour absorption, which is particularly prized for instance in shoe linings. This test is used to quantify the intrinsic capacity of leather to absorb water vapour.
A leather sample is placed in a special leak tight device containing distilled water. The sample is exposed solely to the water vapour from this vessel for 8 hours. The mass difference of the leather before and after exposure to water vapour gives the absorption capacity. The result is expressed in mg/cm²*.
* Milligrams per cm2.
